The Otago Nuggets would like to thank head coach, Brent Matehaere, for his five years of outstanding service in the top job. 

In his time at the helm of the Nuggets, Matehaere lead the Nuggets to two NBL Championships; the 2020 NBL Showdown and 2022 NBL title – the club’s first ever title at this level. 

The Nuggets also made the NBL playoffs in 2023.  

Throughout this period, Matehaere and the Nuggets won a host of other accolades, including 2020 NBL Showdown Coach of the Year, Sport Otago Coach of the Year in 2021 and 2023, and Sport Otago Team of the Year in 2021 and 2023. 

Otago Nuggets General Manager, Angela Ruske, thanked Matehaere for his service and commitment to the club. 

“On behalf of the entire Nuggets family, I’d like to thank Brent and congratulate him on all he achieved in his time at the helm,” Ruske said. 

“At the top level, sport can have a lot of ups and downs, but Brent’s time at the Nuggets will certainly be remembered by all he achieved; most notably those two NBL titles in 2020 and 2022. 

“I wish Brent all the best in the next chapter of his coaching career.”
